I actually originally filmed it the same day as my very first video, my CE-2 Demo. I wasn’t a huge fan of the AC-2, so I decided to save it for later and give it another shot. Well, the results were about the same. Still not a huge fan, but let’s take a listen, shall we? The AC-2 seems to derive its acoustic simulation from very heavy amounts of EQ. To me, that makes the pedal sound extremely scooped and bass heavy. Granted, we are trying to get an acoustic sound from an electric guitar, out of an electric guitar amp. Back in 1996 when the pedal first came out, that was probably the best method. This was before any sort of modeling technology. Controlwise, the AC-2 features a Level control, Body control, Top control, and finally a mode switch. The Body and Top controls are essentially your EQ controls; Lows and Highs. The pedal seems to scoop out a good amount of mids to achieve the acoustic-esque tone, so that knob isn’t needed. Finally, the mode control consists of 4 modes: Standard, Jumbo, Enhance, and Piezo. Standard Simulates a Dreadnaught, Jumbo simulates a Gibson Jumbo size, Enhance is to help you cut through the band, enhancing highs, and Piezo is to simulate a Piezo equipped guitar. Enhance mode was by far my favorite, since it seemed to help add some life to the pedal, which is already on the muddy side of things. I will also say, that the AC-2 doesn’t work that well with humbuckers. I actually filmed this video a second time with my Switchback City Boy (as shown in the video) since the P90 equipped Miura I originally used was extremely bassy. I strongly recommend you use a neck position single coil with the pedal. Overall, I’m not a big fan. I think I have found most pedals in Boss’s history to be pretty useable. This isn’t quite as bad as the CS-1, but it’s pretty close. But don’t worry, every Boss pedal can’t be amazing. Next up, is the AC-3, a pedal which Boss got right!
