Rather than completely redesigning the AC-2, Boss revamped it to create the AC-3. The obvious addition of course, is a reverb function. We will get to that below. The other big change is the addition of COSM modeling technology, the first Boss included in a ‘compact’ pedal. This addition totally changes the tonality of the AC-3, and for the better. As with the AC-2, the AC-3 includes an EQ section (Body and Top) and a Mode control, featuring 4 models of acoustic guitars. Of the 4 Modes, I prefer the Standard mode, or Dreadnaught mode. It sounds the best, and I really like its EQ. However, I really think you need to make sure the Top control is up a bit, or it sounds too boomy. The Jumbo mode has a little too much midrange scoop, and I’m not a fan of the Enhance or Piezo modes. Both sound a bit too artificial. The reverb is a nice addition to the pedal. While not being a total game changer, it definitely helps to smooth out the tones. I would aim for subtle reverb, rather than echo chamber, as too much will sound a bit cheesy. Overall, the COSM modeling absolutely adds some much needed dimension and realism to the AC-3. In my opinion, the AC-2 is obsolete.
