See my current Boss collection here: http://instagram.com/boss_pedal_project Episode 67: LM-2 Limiter As you might have gathered by this point, I’m not a particularly huge fan of compressors on guitar. I do have a handful, even some non-Boss ones, in my collection. However, they are not an effect I typically use in any sort of live band situation. I will say, I was pleasantly surprised with the LM-2. It actually reminded me of some much more expensive compressors I have in my possession. The LM-2 Limiter breaks the Boss tradition of ‘colored’ compression, and gives you a nice, relatively transparent, compressor/ Limiter effect. I generally shy away from more than 2 or so knobs on a compressor meant for guitar. I feel like there is a pretty much a universal sweet spot, and we as guitarists have no business mucking it up tweaking things. I like the Dyna Comp methodology of 2 knobs. Essentially, ‘Compression’ and ‘Output’. The LM-2 includes both of these knobs, but labels them ‘Threshold’ and ‘Level’ respectively. The LM-2 also includes an ‘EQ’ knob, which is pretty handy, and a ‘Release knob’, which is also nice. The EQ knob is especially handy, helping bring back a little top end if you want it. Typical to Boss pedals, setting the knobs all to 12:00 is a good starting point. However, I should note that the Level knob should be set at around 3:00 while everything else is at 12:00. This helps make up the lost gain. At this setting, I was able to get a nice, full, compression without much noise. I also felt like the effect was relatively transparent. I say relatively, because I can still tell I’m playing through a pedal. It’s just not as obvious and squishy as say an MXR Dyna Comp. When run into the high input, I honestly didn’t notice much difference when engaged vs bypassed. There is already compression generated with the amp in a crunchy distortion, so it just sort of blended in. Overall, the LM-2 Limiter is a great pedal. It’s a much more transparent and subtle type of Compressor/ Limiter. If that’s your thing, give this pedal a whirl! -Cameron Johnson Music by Atma Weapon atmaweaponnc.bandcamp.com facebook.com/atmaweaponnc
