It's time to review the very first digital delay stompbox ever made, the one and only Boss DD-2! It's an amazing pedal that's quite sought after, and for good reason. The DD-2 is actually based around a chip from the Roland SDE-3000 rack mounted digital delay. It just so happened to fit exactly across the width of the Boss compact pedal PCB, so the chip was used. The reason why the DD-2 is so coveted, is because it produces a nice and warm delay sound, especially for a digital delay. Not as warm as the DM-2 or DM-3, but it's very pleasant. The reason for this being because the pedal samples at 12 bits, and therefore cuts off the repeats above 7 kHz and below 40 Hz. Just for reference, the human ear can perceive sound ranging from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. That's in a perfect world of course, and going to concerts hasn't helped mine. Basically, you get the longer delay time of a digital delay, plus the somewhat warmer sound such as that of an analog delay. Really, the best of both worlds. The DD-2 has four modes. The first three correspond with delays times and the last is a hold function. The hold function samples a snippit from what you play right before you engage the footswitch. When you engage and hold down the footswitch, that sound is repeated over and over again, giving you a little chord or repeated sound to solo over. You can adjust the delay time to alter the speed of the repeated sample, and also adjust the sample's volume with the level knob. This function was made into a pedal in of itself by Electro Harmonix called the Freeze. The DD-2 is probably my favorite digital delay pedal. It is elegant in its simplicity, and sounds great.
