Thanks for taking it with me! And this is one of those special reviews. I get to demo one of the rarest Boss pedals, the SP-1 Spectrum. I acquired the Spectrum last week. A fateful eBay auction and a last second bid secured me this rare gem. It wasn't cheap, but I was very excited to finally get one. There isn't a whole lot out there that describes what the SP-1 actually does. It's kinda like the Enhancer, in that you really have to play it yourself in order to get it. The best way I can describe the SP-1 is one part Parametric EQ, one part fixed wah, and a dash of boost. The SP-1 operates like a parametric EQ. Imagine a mids knob on a nice console. The frequencies are sweepable within a certain range, and you can boost the desired frequency. Same with the Spectrum. The Balance knob controls the amount of boost. When it's all the way to the left (off), there is no boost at all. The Spectrum knob selects the desired frequency to boost. Ok, so what purpose does the SP-1 serve on guitar? Well, I see two specific musical purposes. The most obvious to me is using it as a fixed wah. You can get that Michael Schenker thing going on, which is very cool. The other application, is to totally funk out your guitar. You can boost the top end and really make your guitar pop out. I think it would work great for funk guitar. But, you have to be careful and not boost too much in the 1k to 4 k range. It get's really shrill. Is the Sp-1 Spectrum worth the price (between $300 and $500 is the average at the moment)? If you can find one on the lower side of that, maybe. I love mine, but I'm also a Boss collector. It's probably something another pedal can do, but owning a real Spectrum is a treat! -Cameron Johnson Music by Atma Weapon atmaweaponnc.bandcamp.com facebook.com/atmaweaponnc
